Business rates (also known as non-domestic rates) are collected by your local council, then paid into a national pool and redistributed by the government between authorities in proportion to the adult population.
This means that areas with relatively few businesses are not disadvantaged, and that all are able to benefit from the services, such as roads, police and fire brigade that local authorities provide.
