Market Towns and Rural Economy

Wealden is classified as one of the most rural districts in England.  It is the largest of the East Sussex districts and boroughs with 28% of the county's total population and 324 square miles of extremely attractive countryside - 48% of the East Sussex area.

The population of just over 143,300 people comprise 63,800 households.  Half live in the five small market towns, Crowborough, Hailsham, Heathfield, Polegate and Uckfield, the rest live in the many villages and hamlets nestling under the South Downs or hugging the contours of the High and Low Weald.
