WARR Helps Meet Wealden Woodburning Demand

A steep growth in the sales of wood burning stoves has seen a surge in demand for a traditional Wealden product - firewood.

Together with continued interest in the sustainable management of woodlands, it has meant local forester and arboricultural contractor, Mike Jackson and his business, M J Wood Solutions, have been finding it difficult to meet customers' orders across Wealden and Lewes, even when working seven days a week.

The Wealden & Rother Rural (WARR) Partnership has been able to dramatically improve Mr Jackson's fortunes and the service he is able to offer customers by providing a grant to help purchase a log processor.

The machine's improved safety and efficiency increases the volume of timber M J Wood Solutions is able to process.  This, in turn, presents an opportunity for other small woodland owners to benefit by contracting M J Wood Solutions to help them manage their woodlands.

"This year I have seen customers ordering multiple loads well in advance of the usual seasonal rush and anticipate a busy winter season ahead. The new processor ensures I can meet this ever-growing demand, whilst also working with other local woodland owners to manage and process their wood," said Mike Jackson. "In this tough economic climate, where business loans are difficult to obtain, I appreciate the support the WARR partnership has provided - enabling me to grow my company and pursue new opportunities."

Increasing the area of managed woodland improves access for public enjoyment and helps to maintain a consistent habitat for local wildlife, particularly birds and butterflies. "The sustainable management of our woodlands is a key factor in the preservation of our attractive environment whilst also providing for a renewable and local source of energy," said Wealden District Councillor Roy Galley, who sits on the WARR board.  "We are delighted that the WARR Partnership has been able to assist local businesses in this way."

Thanks to funding from Defra and the EU under the Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE), over the five years to 2013, the WARR Partnership has £2.4 million to award to projects which help to improve our rural economy.  Grants of up to £50,000 are available for activities such as; farm diversification; adding value to agricultural and forestry products; creation and development of micro-enterprises; tourism; village renewal and development, and the conservation of our rural heritage.  For more information and details of how to apply, visit external link the WARR Partnership's website  or telephone the team for advice and guidance on 01424 787400.
